"Ink & Stone" is a collaborative exhibition featuring the work of Portland print maker Andrew Govanstone and Geelong sculptor Steve Singline. "An opportunity to explore my long-held fascination for printmaking emerged in 2003 when Dr Carmel Wallace established the portland bay press, a public access print workshop. Since that time I have worked with the solar plate medium, and developed a series of prints featuring botanica, natural forms and appropriated nudes from the 1920s. In 2003 I became a foundation member of the portland bay press and was convenor for 3 years." - Andrew Govanstone. "As a sculptor, I aim to create pieces that people have an intrinsic personal connection to. Each piece in this exhibition has its own story to tell and the themes I have explored across the body of work include family, personal growth and a connection to the environment. All the work is carved from Talc (commonly referred to as Soapstone) that has originated in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Talc is a beautiful soft medium to work with and there is a natural colour variation across the stone including various tones of whites, greens and browns. All the work is carved, shaped, polished and oiled by hand." - Steve Singline |
